Trigger Point Injections Q & A

Trigger points are tiny, inflamed knots in your myofascial tissue, located in your skeletal muscles. The knots develop from repetitive strain and injuries but can also occur from physical inactivity, bad posture, and nutritional deficiencies. These include:

  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin B1
  • Vitamin B12
  • Folic acid
  • Malic acid
  • Magnesium

Trigger points are located in the upper back and behind the shoulder, leading to pain in your neck, back, and head. When active, trigger points cause persistent, radiating discomfort from the pain site.

Trigger point pain initially stays local to the knot. But the longer the knot goes untreated, the more likely the pain will spread outward and limit your body’s functionality. Muscles affected by the knot may weaken, forcing your other muscles to overcompensate and further stress your body. The pain may affect your neck, back, and pelvis, resulting in poor posture.

Chronic poor posture can cause injuries to other body parts, such as:

  • Back
  • Neck
  • Jaw
  • Sciatica

Trigger point injections are natural and safe and address the cause of your symptoms for long-term pain relief. Traditional trigger point treatments, such as prescription muscle relaxers, provide temporary relief only and may cause side effects, such as blurred vision, drowsiness, and diarrhea.

The procedure takes place in the office. It’s relatively quick and painless. We may recommend lidocaine for sensitive patients to numb the injection site before administering the shot.

The procedure begins with a thorough physical examination to locate your trigger points. They clean the trigger point to prepare for the anesthetic shot. The shot relaxes the trigger point, but if it doesn’t fully relax, they may recommend another shot at a slightly different angle or depth. After the procedure, you’ll need to keep your muscles moving. We will provide instructions for proper exercise and stretching techniques you can do at home.
